Good ideas:

  • Instigate a training programme to incorporate personal development plans
  • Encourage a company culture, leadership drive that demonstrates commitment to training
  • Show a career path, opportunities available if training is carried out

Yorkshire and the Humber - 16th July 2008

Big issue:

  • How can we encourage local training programmes to work with contractors on a long term basis?

Good ideas:

  • Demonstrate the benefits of partnership working
  • Provide external funding (longer term)
  • Continuity/consistency of workload
  • Identify long term employment opps
  • Choose right partners (track record)
  • Contractual obligation (KPI)
  • Local people for local projects
  • Buy in from all stakeholders at early stage (inc supply chain)
  • Role models/mentor

South East - 3rd September 2008

  • How can we better engage with:
    1. Supply chain
    2. Local communities and projects

Good ideas:

  • Pre-procurement strategy
  • KPIs monitor
  • Pay them/incentivise
  • Joint training
  • Work with local stakeholders
  • Be very honest
  • Clear brief and roles
  • Clarify benefits of involvement
  • Chartermark for organisations that invest in the community
  • Open days, workshops
  • Different levels of involvement for different stakeholders
  • Listen and act on ideas
  • Don't overdo it
  • Don't over promise
  • Publicise best/good practice

West Midlands - 1st October 2008

Big issue:

  • How can we deal with the potential reduction in training/apprenticeships impacting on future delivery?

Good ideas:

  • Rotate apprentices around partner and other sites so that outputs can be achieved - there is plenty of funding out there to do this
  • Encourage/direct supply chain to provide opportunities
  • Next step processes in career advancement (e.g. HR support) and grant funding at this level

South West - 5th November

Big issue:

  • How do we engage with the customer from the outset? (When the customer is not known from the outset)

Good ideas:

  • Clear customer involvement ethos at strategic level
  • Be known/seen as an approachable organisation
  • Toolkit to maximise opportunity to engage customers and for customers to engage
  • Remove barriers - community communication
  • Resources

North West - 4th December

  • How do we encourage/commit our clients to adopt local labour and supply chain initiatives?

Good ideas:

  • Future skills shortage
  • More economical
  • Local funding
  • Socially responsible
  • Joint investment

East of England - 25th February

Big issue:

  • Are we adding value and giving back to the local community? What can we do?

Good ideas:

  • Real value and passion
  • Become involved with Education Business Partnership Education: Schools - reading schemes, mentoring schemes, workshops (interviewing skils) careers days etc.
  • Apprenticeships schemes, return to work, local employment, support local businesses
  • Training incentive schemes, buddy schemes - help for older people out of work
  • Community networking/involvement - panels (residents), pride in community, support for local community projects
  • Wlaking the walk, leave a legacy, beyond bricks and mortar
